The Jesus and Mary Chain sono una band scozzese di noise pop formatasi ad East Kilbride nel 1984. I membri fondatori sono i fratelli Jim e William Reid, originari della stessa città. La formazione iniziale includeva anche Bobby Gillespie alla batteria, che in seguito avrebbe fondato Primal Scream. I primi concerti del gruppo erano noti per il comportamento irruento dei musicisti, che sembravano intenzionati a punire il pubblico con un'ondata di distorsioni e feedback chitarristici. Spesso si interrompevano improvvisamente i concerti, lasciando dietro di sé rabbia e violenza.
