Monsters of Folk è un supergruppo americano formatosi nel 2004 da Jim James dei My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst e Mike Mogis di Bright Eyes e M. Ward. L'idea nacque durante i tour con i rispettivi progetti solisti e band. Dopo aver suonato insieme sia sul palco che dietro le quinte, decisero di collaborare a un progetto comune. A causa degli impegni dei membri con i loro progetti principali, l'album d'esordio arrivò solo nel 2009, pubblicato il 22 settembre su Rough Trade. Il sound del gruppo è una miscela folk-rock influenzata dal cantautorato americano e dalla musica indie.
