Ancient è una band norvegese di black metal proveniente da Eidsvag, Nesset, formatasi nel 1992. Il gruppo ha pubblicato sei album in studio per la Metal Blade Records. Inizialmente Ancient possedeva un sound black metal crudo, simile a quello dei Darkthrone. A partire dall'album *The Cainian Chronicle*, hanno abbracciato un sound più nordico/atmosferico, paragonabile a quello di Emperor. Dopo un periodo di instabilità nella formazione, hanno introdotto strumenti gotici come violini, voci femminili e sintetizzatori nella loro musica.
