Ancient Rites è una band belga di black metal (inizialmente) e folk metal (recentemente) formatasi nel 1988. La formazione iniziale comprendeva i chitarristi Johan e Phillip, il batterista Stefan e Gunther Theys al basso e alla voce. Nel 1990 venne pubblicato il demo *Dark Ritual* nell'underground, ottenendo attenzione mondiale proprio mentre il black metal stava guadagnando importanza nella scena metal. Poco dopo la pubblicazione del demo, Phillip morì in un incidente d'auto e poco dopo Stefan si suicidò. Nonostante questo doloroso episodio per la band, decisero di continuare e al posto di Stefan venne assunto Walter Van Cortenberg, suo roadie. Ancient Rites ha pubblicato numerosi album, tra cui *The Darkest Hour* (1994), *Blood of the Ancients* (1996) e *The Serpent's Embrace* (2003). Il loro stile musicale è caratterizzato da sonorità dark e atmosferiche, con influenze folk e melodiche.
