Nasce a Nutbush, vicino a Brownsville nel Tennessee (USA) il 26 novembre 1939. All'età di 10 anni canta già nel coro della chiesa della sua città, dove il padre, Richard, era pastore. Nel 1956 i genitori si separano e Anna Mae con la sorella Alline, vanno a vivere a St. Louis. Oggi vive sul lago di Zurigo in Svizzera, dove ha da poco ottenuto la cittadinanza. Nella città del Missouri a St Louis incontra il musicista Ike Turner. Insieme registrano Little Ann nel 1958 e nel 1960, accompagnati dalle vocalist The Ikettes, A Fool in Love che ottiene subito un notevole successo, giungendo ai primi posti nelle classifiche internazionali. Tina e Ike si sposano alla fine del 1960 a Tijuana, ma il matrimonio viene invalidato perché Ike non ottiene il divorzio dalla prima moglie. Comunque Tina prende il cognome di Ike.
