I Velvet Underground sono stati una band rock statunitense di grande influenza, attivi dal 1964 al 1973. Fondati a New York da Lou Reed (voce, chitarra), John Cale (violoncello, tastiere), Sterling Morrison (chitarra) e Maureen Tucker (batteria), il gruppo è noto per aver introdotto elementi sperimentali nel rock, influenzando generi come il punk, l'indie e la musica elettronica. Il loro sound, caratterizzato da testi provocatori e melodie minimaliste, ha spesso esplorato temi di droga, sessualità e marginalità sociale. Nico, cantante tedesca, si unì al gruppo per il loro album di debutto (1967), considerato un classico del rock underground. Dopo la partenza di Cale nel 1968, i Velvet Underground continuarono a registrare con Doug Yule (basso, tastiere). Il loro lavoro più famoso è probabilmente "The Velvet Underground and Nico", prodotto da Andy Warhol.
