Jan Garbarek (nato il 4 marzo 1947 a Mysen, Norvegia) è un sassofonista tenore e soprano norvegese attivo nei generi jazz, classico e musica del mondo. È l'unico figlio di Czeslaw Garbarek, un ex prigioniero di guerra polacco, e di una figlia di un contadino norvegese. Senza nazionalità fino all'età di sette anni (in Norvegia non c'è un riconoscimento automatico della cittadinanza), Garbarek è cresciuto a Oslo. A 21 anni ha sposato Vigdis; sua figlia Anja Garbarek è anche musicista. Garbarek è considerato uno dei sassofonisti più influenti del panorama jazz contemporaneo, noto per il suo stile unico che fonde elementi di improvvisazione libera, musica folk norvegese e influenze orientali.
