The Format war eine Indie-Rock-Band, die von den Arizona-Einwohnern Nate Ruess und Sam Means gegründet wurde. Die Band gab am 4. Februar 2008 eine Pause bekannt. Ihr Stil kann als Mischung aus Indie-, Alternative-, Punk- und Folkmusik angesehen werden, mit Elementen der Popmusik der 1960er und 1970er Jahre. Obwohl Means und Ruess die wichtigsten Mitglieder der Band sind, haben sie mit Mike Schey, Mark Buzard, Don Raymond und, für die DVD-Aufnahme und die Sommertour 2007, dem aktuellen Schlagzeuger von The Honorary Title und ehemaligen Mitglied von The Format Adam Boyd, getourt und aufgenommen.
