When Machine head released their first album, Burn My Eyes in 1994, they had already built up a solid reputation as a live band. The release polarized opinion; in some cases it was extremely well received and was considered by some metal-music journalists to be one of the seminal metal albums of the 90s. Their next album was The More Things Change (1997) and marked a change in direction for the band, with Flynn adding rap style to the metal mix.
