Jeph Howard (bass, backing vocals) and Branden Steineckert (drums) formed Strange Itch in Utah in 1994, but changed their name to The Used in 2001 after several line-up changes. Howard and Steineckert added Bert McCracken (vocals, piano) and Quinn Allman (Guitar) to complete their line-up and began sending demos out. Record producer and Goldfinger frontman John Feldman liked what he heard of The Used and helped them sign to Reprise Records. The Used released their self-titled debut in 2002 and followed it up in 2004 with In Love and Death.
