The shops where filled with things that I could buy
But the prices up them all the guns got high
Don't suppose they're gonna drop
Gotta get used to the charity shop
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Seems like only yesterday food was so cheap
Now the cost of...goes up every week
So you search for the best deeds
Have to miss out on some leaves
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Get that first foot on the ladder they all say
They know there's no way
Ain't no bank that's gonna lend
They got bonuses to spend
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Comfort house is something I would never get
Put my name down on the list I'm waiting yet
So I'm renting my...landlords profiting on me
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Getting round is getting harder everyday
Used to drive a car but lately there's no way
Trains are only for the rich
And the buses are the rich
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
And the doctors don't' come out no more at night
They won't treat you if the think you don't live right
Well they privatize the rest
Soon there'll be no energies
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Keeping war is something poor folks cannot do
Cause the oilmen need to drive a yacht nor too
The companies may go as the pensioners may come
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
Just tell me how can poor men
Stand such times and live
There used to be a joke that UB40 stood for the "Unemployed Birmingham 40", because there were so many band members in their videos, and none of them looked exactly sharp-suited. In fact the pop-reggae band did name themselves after an unemployment benefit form, though there was never 40 members - only eight, plus guests. They formed in 1979 and made a breakthrough when their debut single, "King/Food For Thought", was the first ever single to break the UK Top 10 on an independent label. Debut album Signing Off (1980) reached No.2 on the album chart and eventually achieved platinum sales. The group toured and recorded regularly, achieving another No.2 album in 1981 (Present Arms) a No.4 in 1982 (UB44) and finally a UK album chart-topper in 1983 with Labour of Love. That was also their American breakthrough, reaching No.8 on the Billboard 200. A cover of Neil Diamond's "Red, Red Wine" gave the band their first No.1 single in the UK, and it would eventually top the American singles chart too on re-release in 1988.
