The Mountain Goats sono un gruppo musicale folk rock statunitense formatosi nel 1991 a Claremont, California, dal cantautore e polistrumentista John Darnielle. Il nome del gruppo deriva da una canzone di Screamin' Jay Hawkins intitolata "Big Yellow Coat". Per gran parte della sua storia, Darnielle è stato l'unico membro stabile dei The Mountain Goats, collaborando con un variegato gruppo di musicisti in studio e durante i concerti.
