Jeph Howard (bass, backing vocals) and Branden Steineckert (drums) formed Strange Itch in Utah in 1994, but changed their name to The Used in 2001 after several line-up changes. Howard and Steineckert added Bert McCracken (vocals, piano) and Quinn Allman (Guitar) to complete their line-up and began sending demos out. Record producer and Goldfinger frontman John Feldman liked what he heard of The Used and helped them sign to Reprise Records.
