Dopo aver completato il tour della 3 Canadian Idol, la Jepsen si ritirò per concentrarsi nella scrittura e nella registrazione di nuove canzoni e nel completamento di una band. I suoi demo attirarono molta attenzione ed ha firmato un accordo con la Simkin Artist Management e con la Dexter Entertainment. Il 16 giugno 2008 Carly ha lanciato il suo primo singolo di debutto, una cover della canzone di John Denver Sunshine on My Shoulders.
