Hard rock/metal band Melvins are based around singer and guitarist Buzz Osborne (known as "King Buzzo") and drummer Dale Crover. Taking influence initially from hardcore punk acts like Black Flag, but adding the slow and thick guitars of metal bands like Black Sabbath, they have forged a three-decade career without ever achieving mainstream commercial success. They have developed a small army of dedicated fans, including members of Tool, Mastodon and Boris. They initially emerged from a similar area of the state of Washington as Nirvana, and were friends with Kurt Cobain and his bandmates. Crover played with Nirvana on occasion, and it is widely thought that the Melvins' sound had a huge influence on Nirvana's development of grunge. Although Melvins' fans might claim every album is essential, usually their most popular are Melvins (1992, originally called Lysol but changed for legal reasons) and their major-label debut Houdini (1993) which was partly produced by Cobain.
