Neutral Milk Hotel è stato il progetto musicale del cantautore recluso Jeff Mangum, uno dei fondatori dell'etichetta discografica e collettivo Elephant 6. Il gruppo ha pubblicato il suo album di debutto nel 1996, intitolato *On Avery Island*, che ha messo in mostra un suono lo-fi, una sezione d'archi puntuale e la voce appassionata ed emotiva di Mangum. L'album è stato accolto con grande apprezzamento dalla critica e da un pubblico sempre più ampio, consolidando lo status di Neutral Milk Hotel come band cult. Mangum ha poi abbandonato il progetto nel 1998, lasciando i fan in attesa di nuovi lavori. Nel corso degli anni, *On Avery Island* è diventato un album iconico del folk alternativo e indie rock, influenzando generazioni di musicisti.
