Theatre of Tragedy è una band norvegese di Stavanger, formatasi nel 1993 e nota per i suoi primi album che hanno influenzato notevolmente il genere gothic metal. Il gruppo utilizzava un contrasto vocale tra bassi maschili (con l'utilizzo occasionale di growl death) e soprano femminile (comunemente chiamato "Beauty and the Beast"). Nei primi tre album, le liriche erano scritte prevalentemente in inglese antico. A partire dall'album *Musique*, Theatre of Tragedy ha subito cambiamenti radicali nello stile, influenzato dal genere industrial rock, abbandonando l'inglese antico e i growl death.
