Mates of State è un duo musicale formatosi nel 1997 da Kori Gardner (tastiere e voce) e Jason Hammel (batteria e voce). Entrambi provenivano dalla scena musicale di Lawrence, Kansas, dove già suonavano chitarra e cantavano. Dopo essersi trasferiti a San Francisco, hanno iniziato a collaborare come duo, creando un sound caratteristico basato su una miriade di voci diverse per tastiere, batteria e voci che si alternano tra strati sonori ricchi e duetti giocosi.
