I hope it rains at my funeral

Well a man with forty acres, plowed and planted,
Didn't send his fourteen year old boys to school.
Well the one thing that I learned working on my daddy's farm
was that put them crops in early when it gets cool.

In the magazines I saw the naked women.
I heard about the drinking and the bars.
If my papa could've caught me he'd have killed me.
Said you might run son, but you won't get that far.

Miles were good, but the mileage is turning my hair gray.
Met some people who knew me and called me friend.
Ain't no sense in wantin' to live my life over.
Find different ways to make the same mistakes again.

Well I hit the town, or you might say it hit me.
Next morning, there were things I knew more about.
Some woman took me in she said I seemed to be alright.
I turned her on the same way she turned me out.

Well the first law that I broke, right away Johnny law caught me.
Helped build the country roads for a while.
Fed two times a day, knocked you down about 4.
By the 13th day I couldn't even crack a smile.

Well I met a nice girl. She told me that I was her baby.
She let me go but never told me why.
I learned what it means to be somebody's baby.
They let you down to the bed at night by yourself so you can cry.

So let me say this, never meant to hurt nobody.
Guess there's still a few I couldn't look in the eye.
Well grant me this then, rain on my funeral.
Once I'd like to be the only one that's left there crying.
