Country rock band Cowboy Junkies were formed in Toronto, Canada by siblings Margo (vocals) Michael (guitar, songwriter) and Peter (drums) Timmins and lifelong friend Alan Anton (bass) in 1985. It is widely believed that the band have taken their name from Townes Van Zandt's song "Cowboy Junkies Lament" but the track was actually written in 1989 and seems to have been written for and inspired by the Cowboy Junkies.
