Gang Starr ist ein Hip-Hop-Duo, das 1987 in New York von Guru (Keith Edward Elam) und DJ Premier (Edward Barnes) gegründet wurde. Nach einigen frühen Veröffentlichungen mit anderen Mitgliedern etablierte sich das Duo als eine der einflussreichsten Kräfte der New Yorker Hip-Hop-Szene. Ihre Musik, geprägt von Gurus nachdenklichen Texten und DJ Premiers komplexen und innovativen Beats, prägte den Sound des East Coast Hip-Hops in den 1990er Jahren. Zu ihren bekanntesten Tracks gehören "Mass Appeal", "Just to Get By" und "Above the Clouds". Gang Starr veröffentlichte acht Studioalben, darunter das goldene Album "Hard to Earn" (1994) und das gefeierte Album "Moment of Truth" (1998). Die Gruppe löste sich 2003 nach Gurus Tod auf.
