Mad Season fu un supergruppo grunge formatosi a Seattle nel 1994. Il nucleo del gruppo era costituito da Layne Staley, voce dei Alice in Chains, e Mike McCready, chitarrista degli Pearl Jam. A completare la formazione ci furono John Baker Saunders al basso (già nei The Screaming Trees) e Barrett Martin alla batteria (conosciuto per le sue collaborazioni con i Screaming Trees e gli alt-rock). L'unico album pubblicato da Mad Season fu *Above*, uscito nel 1995. L'album, caratterizzato da un sound oscuro e malinconico, è considerato un classico del grunge e ha riscosso un grande successo di critica. La band si sciolse poco dopo la pubblicazione dell'album a causa della dipendenza di Staley dalle droghe. Tra i brani più rappresentativi di Mad Season ricordiamo *River of Deceit*, *Long Gone Day* e *I'm Above*.
