Jonathan Paul Clegg, noto come Johnny Clegg, è stato un cantautore, ballerino e antropologo sudafricano nato nel 1953 a Johannesburg. Soprannominato lo «Zulu bianco», ha contribuito in modo significativo alla musica popolare del Sudafrica mescolando lo stile zulu con il pop inglese. Ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '70 con il gruppo Juluka, formato insieme al musicista Sipho Mchunu. Il duo ha riscosso un grande successo grazie all'unione di tradizioni musicali diverse, introducendo elementi zulu nel rock e folk occidentale. Nel 1983, Clegg ha fondato Savuka, un nuovo gruppo che ha continuato a esplorare le fusioni musicali tra lo stile zulu e il pop internazionale. Tra i brani più rappresentativi di Johnny Clegg figurano «Asimbonanga», «Great Heart» e «Scatterlings of Africa». La sua musica è stata spesso utilizzata come colonna sonora per film e documentari, contribuendo a diffondere la cultura sudafricana in tutto il mondo. Clegg ha dedicato gran parte della sua vita all'antropologia, studiando le tradizioni culturali dello Zulu e promuovendo il dialogo interculturale. È morto nel 2019 a causa di un tumore al pancreas.
