Nato da una famiglia di estrazione operaia (il padre Lee "Orbie" Orbison per trovare lavoro si spostò con la famiglia durante gli anni quaranta dapprima a Forth Wort nel Texas e successivamente nel Nuovo Messico), il giovane Orbison dimostrò presto interesse per la musica fondando una band all'età di tredici anni, i "Wink Westerners". Il suo primo successo commerciale arrivò nel giugno del 1956 con Ooby Dooby, scritta dai compagni di college e registrata negli studi del produttore Norman Petty a Clovis, nel Nuovo Messico.
