Figures on a Beach è stata una band musicale formatasi a Detroit, Michigan, all'inizio degli anni '80 dalle ceneri del gruppo Razor 1922. Il loro stile musicale era influenzato da New Romantic, techno e pop. La formazione comprendeva il vocalist Anthony Kaczynski; il chitarrista John Rolski; il tastierista Christopher Ewen; il bassista Perry Tell; e il batterista, designer multimediale, animatore e illustratore Michael "Smitty" Smith. Nel 1983 hanno pubblicato un EP indipendente intitolato *Swimming*, seguito nel 1984 dal singolo *Breathless* prodotto da Don Was. Nel 1985 la band si trasferì a Boston e venne ingaggiata da Seymour Stein di Sire Records. Il loro primo album in studio, *Standing on Ceremony*, uscì nel 1987. Un secondo album omonimo, *Figures on a Beach*, seguì nel 1989, contenente una cover del successo di Bachman-Turner Overdrive *You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet* e il singolo *Accidentally 4th Street (Gloria)*. La band si sciolse nel 1991.
