Die Waterboys sind eine schottische Rockband, die 1983 vom Sänger-Songwriter und Musiker Mike Scott gegründet wurde. Der Bandname stammt aus einem Vers in Lou Reeds Song „The Kids“ auf dem Album „Berlin“. Die Musik der Waterboys hat sich im Laufe der Jahre durch verschiedene Phasen entwickelt, beeinflusst von den verschiedenen Künstlern, mit denen sie zusammengearbeitet haben. Anfangs waren sie für ihren energiegeladenen und melodischen Rock bekannt, später erkundeten sie irische Folk-Sounds mit dem erfolgreichen Album „Fisherman's Blues“ (1988), das als Meisterwerk des Genres gilt. Später wandte sich die Band einem intimen und nachdenklichen Sound zu, der von Einflüssen des Folk Rocks geprägt ist. Nach einer Pause 1993 reformierten sich The Waterboys 2000 und sind bis heute aktiv in der Musikproduktion und -performance. Zu den bekanntesten Songs der Band gehören „The Whole of the Moon“, „Fisherman's Blues“, „How Long Will I Love You“ und „A Girl Called Johnny“.
