Heatmiser è stata una band indie rock originaria di Portland, Oregon, formatasi nell'ottobre 1991. Composta da Elliott Smith (chitarra e voce), Neil Gust (chitarra e voce), Brandt Peterson (basso; in seguito sostituito da Sam Coomes, frontman di Quasi) e Tony Lash (batteria), la band era nota per i suoi testi ben scritti e le canzoni che spesso mettevano a confronto parole e melodie malinconiche e allegre. Le canzoni pop-oriented di Elliott Smith contrasta con quelle più cupe di Gust, mentre sia Smith che Gust affrontavano temi come rabbia, alienazione, solitudine e disperazione.
