Nato a Chiswick, quartiere sudoccidentale di Londra, scopre la sua "vocazione" musicale all'età di 5 anni quando gli zii gli regalano una batteria giocattolo in occasione del Natale; più tardi i genitori gli comprano batterie vere, sempre più complete. Non impara ancora la notazione musicale, ma continua a suonare accompagnando la radio o la televisione, sviluppando un metodo proprio[1]. A 12 anni fonda il suo primo complesso. A 14 anni entra nella Barbara Speake Stage School, dando inizio ad una carriera come attore e modello. Appare come comparsa per pochi secondi nel film sui Beatles Tutti per uno. Fa un provino anche per Romeo e Giulietta, ma senza successo. Nel 1970, Collins suona le percussioni nella canzone Art of Dying, contenuta nell'LP All Things Must Pass, di George Harrison[2]. Pur continuando con la carriera di attore, si capisce che è molto portato per la musica. Con il suo gruppo The Freehold scrive la sua prima canzone, "Lying Crying Dying". La sua prima incisione giunge con i Flaming Youth, per cui suona come batterista nell'album ARK 2 (1969). Il concept album si ispira al grande evento del periodo, quello dello sbarco americano sulla Luna, ma non ha un grande successo.
