Cinder è un gruppo rock alternativo formatosi nel 1999 in Florida quando il cantante Roger Young e il chitarrista solista Kenny Craig iniziarono a suonare in locali e bar lungo la costa del sud della Florida, scrivendo canzoni per l'album *Soapy Tuna*. In questo periodo si unirono al gruppo il bassista Pat McGuire e il batterista Brian Colbert, cambiando il nome in Jesus Gun. In questa formazione registrarono un altro album, disponibile solo durante i concerti. Nel 2001 firmarono un contratto con la Geffen Records e registrarono l'album *Break Your Silence*, prodotto da Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots e Velvet Revolver) per nove delle undici tracce. Jay Baumgartner (Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm e Drowning Pool) e John Kurzweg (Creed, Puddle of Mudd) contribuirono anche alla produzione. Dopo la registrazione, il nome del gruppo cambiò nuovamente in Cinder, su pressione dell'etichetta discografica per motivi legali. Cinder iniziò a esibirsi con artisti di grande calibro come Creed, Sevendust e 30 Seconds to Mars, guadagnandosi un seguito fedele in tutta l'America. Purtroppo, prima della data di uscita la Geffen Records fu acquisita e i gruppi non firmati, incluso Cinder, furono rilasciati, e l'album non venne mai pubblicato. Il singolo estratto dall'album, *Soul Creation*, venne comunque diffuso e ricevette ampia esposizione sia in radio che su MTV, promuovendo un album destinato a non esistere (sebbene una copia promozionale dell'album fosse effettivamente trapelata su internet nel 2002). *Soul Creation* riuscì ad entrare nelle classifiche Mainstream Rock. La canzone è stata anche inclusa nei videogiochi PS2 *MX Unleashed* e *NHL 2004*. Questo singolo aiutò a mantenere vivi i sogni del gruppo mentre lottava con il contratto della sua casa discografica. Ci vollero altri due anni perché Cinder fosse rilasciato dal suo contratto con la Geffen Records, e altri due anni dopo per essere ingaggiato dalla Rock Ridge Records.
